Lahaina (4th of August)
Today we visited Maui - we docked at Lahaina, we had a tour up to Mt Haleluka (spelling is probably wrong) - it's one of the tallest mountains in Hawaii - over 10,000 feet! The bus was quite reasonable (it had padded seats and actually air conditioning, rather than rolling down the windows) - it was a long and tiring trip (we were all tired when we got back).
The bus took us up to the lookout at 9000 odd feet - it was FREEZING!!! going from 30 degree temperatures to about 5 degrees (with wind chill it was probably lower!) - looking down at the blasted landscape of the volcano (it's classified as 'dormant'not having erupted since the 1800s) - it felt like we were on another planet! Looking down on the clouds was rather fun too.. very clear sky. They had a observetry up a little higher, but it was operated by the US air force and entry was restricted.
After a very long trip down the moutain we had the afternoon at the Maui Ocean centre.. saw lots of cool fish and sharks and such - got some nice pics that I'll put up once I have decent internet access again.
