Windmills |
Originally we were scheduled to dock in close to amsterdam - however things changed in the 12 months since we booked the cruise, and we ended up at a container port quite a distance out from the city.
Our tour today was more of a look at the country, rather than concentrating on Amsterdam itself.

More Klogs! |
We headed out along the highways they have on top of various dykes - most of the places we were visiting were 4-5m below sea level. It's a very flat, very green country - lots of grasslands, canals and crops everywhere. We stopped in at one of the cultural villages, aparantly when they realised that the old windmills were degrading, they moved many of the intact ones into locations around the country where they could be preserved.
Aside from the windmills we also got to see how they make wooden shoes (klogs) - pretty good demonstration. We also got to see how they produce chesses/etc. Our next stop was Edam (yes where the cheese originally came from) and we toured around the countryside seeing a lot of interesting places.

Klog Making |
They have TONS of wind-turbines throughout the country - I'm guessing they've replaced the old windmills as landmarks.
